After many procedures — from liposuction and tummy tucks to orthopaedic and vein surgery — your surgeon will recommend medical compression. It controls swelling, supports tissue and can make recovery noticeably more comfortable.
Knowing how compression helps, and how to wear and care for your garment, makes a real difference to your results.
Why compression after surgery?
Surgery causes fluid to accumulate in the treated area. Graduated compression gently directs that fluid away, reducing swelling and bruising while supporting healing tissue.
- Reduces post-operative swelling and bruising
- Supports tissue and helps skin retract smoothly
- Improves comfort and can reduce pain
- Lowers the risk of fluid pockets (seromas)
Your recovery timeline
Every procedure differs, but most surgeons recommend a phased approach. Always follow your own surgeon’s instructions over general guidance.
- Weeks 1–2: wear almost continuously, including overnight
- Weeks 3–6: continue daytime wear as swelling settles
- Beyond 6 weeks: your surgeon may step you down gradually
Caring for your garment and skin
A well-maintained garment keeps its therapeutic pressure, and healthy skin prevents irritation during long wear.
- Wash daily in cool water with a mild, residue-free detergent
- Air-dry flat — never tumble-dry or iron
- Moisturise skin at night when the garment is off
- Have a second garment so you always have a clean, supportive one
