Higher compression classes are firm by design — that is what makes them effective, but it also makes them tricky to apply. The good news is that technique matters far more than strength.
Follow these steps, take your time, and consider a few simple aids to make donning effortless.
Before you start
A little preparation makes the whole process smoother and protects your garment.
- Apply stockings first thing in the morning, before swelling builds
- Make sure skin is clean and completely dry
- Remove rings and jewellery that could snag the fabric
- Consider rubber donning gloves for a better grip
Step by step
Work slowly and smoothly — never yank the fabric into place.
- Reach inside and turn the stocking inside out down to the heel
- Slip your foot in and position the heel pocket correctly
- Roll or ease the fabric up the leg a little at a time
- Smooth out every wrinkle for even, comfortable pressure
Common mistakes to avoid
Most discomfort comes from a handful of avoidable errors.
- Folding or rolling the top band down (this creates a tourniquet effect)
- Leaving wrinkles, which concentrate pressure and pinch
- Pulling from the top instead of easing from the ankle up
- Wearing a worn-out garment that has lost its compression
