Lymphedema is chronic swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid, usually in an arm or leg, when the lymphatic system is damaged or overloaded. It is common after cancer treatment but has many causes.
While there is no cure, modern management keeps swelling controlled, protects the skin and preserves quality of life — and compression is at its heart.
Understanding the condition
Lymphedema usually develops in stages. Recognising it early and acting quickly leads to far better long-term control.
- Stage 0: no visible swelling, but heaviness or tightness
- Stage 1: swelling that reduces with elevation
- Stage 2: swelling that no longer reduces on its own
- Stage 3: significant swelling with skin changes
The pillars of decongestive therapy
The gold standard is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) — a combination approach delivered by trained therapists and continued at home.
- Manual lymphatic drainage (specialised massage)
- Multi-layer compression bandaging in the intensive phase
- Flat-knit compression garments for daily maintenance
- Skin care and targeted exercise to support drainage
Living well day to day
Small, consistent habits protect your progress and keep flare-ups rare.
- Wear your maintenance garment exactly as prescribed
- Keep skin clean and well moisturised to prevent infection
- Stay active — movement powers the lymphatic system
- Report any new redness, heat or rapid swelling promptly
