Understanding recovery

Why compression after surgery?

After surgery the body responds with swelling (oedema) and bruising as fluid and blood collect in the treated area. Medical compression applies even, controlled pressure that limits this build-up, supports the tissues as they reattach, and keeps you more comfortable through recovery.

It is used across many procedures — liposuction and body contouring, abdominoplasty, breast surgery, and orthopaedic operations. Your surgeon prescribes when to wear it and for how long; we make sure the garment fits correctly at every stage.

What compression helps with

  • Reducing post-operative swelling and fluid build-up
  • Minimising bruising and supporting circulation
  • Holding dressings and tissues securely in place
  • Improving comfort and reducing the feeling of tightness
  • Helping skin retract for a smoother final contour
Stages of recovery

The right garment at the right time.

Post-surgical compression is worn in phases. Stage 1 garments are softer and easy to fasten for the swollen, sensitive days immediately after surgery. Stage 2 garments are firmer and more shaping, worn once initial swelling subsides to refine the result.

Stage 1 — immediately post-op

Soft, adjustable garments with easy closures, worn day and night through the first weeks.

Stage 2 — weeks 2–6

Firmer, contouring garments that maintain pressure as you return to daily activity.

Custom when needed

For complex or combined procedures, custom flat-knit garments ensure precise, even pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Most procedures call for 4–6 weeks, often day and night at first, then daytime only. Your surgeon sets the exact schedule — we fit the garments to match it.

Stage 1 garments are softer with easy closures for the swollen early days. Stage 2 garments are firmer and more shaping, worn once initial swelling settles to refine the final result.

We recommend a fitting before surgery where possible, so your Stage 1 garment is ready. For Stage 2 we re-measure after swelling reduces to ensure the correct size.

Yes — recovery garments are washable at 40°C on a gentle cycle. We usually advise two garments so one can be worn while the other is laundered.
