Compression therapy works by applying graduated pressure to your limbs, helping your veins and lymphatic system move fluid more efficiently. But not all compression is the same — medical garments are classified by compression class (CCL), which indicates how much pressure they apply at the ankle.
This guide explains what each class means and who it suits. Always consult your doctor before choosing a compression class.
Quick reference guide
CCL 1 — Light (18–21 mmHg)
The mildest level of medical compression. CCL 1 provides gentle, preventative support for early signs of venous insufficiency or for people who stand or sit for long periods.
- Heavy, tired legs at the end of the day
- Mild spider veins or early varicose veins
- Pregnancy-related leg discomfort
- Travel and long flights (DVT prevention)
CCL 2 — Moderate (23–32 mmHg)
The most commonly prescribed compression class. CCL 2 offers therapeutic-level pressure suitable for managing diagnosed venous conditions and post-surgical recovery.
- Moderate varicose veins
- Post-sclerotherapy or vein surgery
- Mild to moderate oedema
- Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)
CCL 3 — Strong (34–46 mmHg)
High-level therapeutic compression for more severe venous and lymphatic conditions. CCL 3 requires professional fitting and medical supervision.
- Severe varicose veins with oedema
- Lymphedema (stage 1–2)
- Post-thrombotic syndrome
- Lipoedema management
CCL 4 — Extra Strong (49+ mmHg)
The highest level of compression available, reserved for severe lymphedema and complex venous disorders under strict medical supervision.
- Severe lymphedema (stage 2–3)
- Severe post-thrombotic syndrome
- Complex disorders requiring maximum compression
How to choose the right class
The right class balances therapeutic benefit with daily wearability. A few principles help.
- Consult a specialist first — your doctor assesses your condition
- Get professionally fitted — accurate measurement is essential
- Start lower and move higher only if your doctor advises
- Consider your lifestyle — higher classes take more effort to put on
